By the way, I heard of Maya Angelou when I was 16. I got a greeting card with her quote on it for my birthday. Since then I have gotten at least one Maya Angelou card every year.

"I know that the severity of my “disabling” may not be the extent to which we have discussed in this class but this is everyday reality for so many people ."
Jenny, good job on making me think even deeper about disabilities. I know we abled people never think we could be like that, but all it would take is an auto, skateboard, horseback riding, the list goes on... accident and any one of us could end up needing someone else to help us with the most basic of human needs.

Very thorough analysis, Cassie. I went through parts of BGSU also and saw things I took for granted with a whole new set of eyes. I had always thought of BGSU as being mostly handicapped friendly but if you put yourself in a wheelchair you find out just how difficult it is to do what able-bodied people just do without thinking about it.

Being off campus I forgot how difficult the commute to and from class would be. This would definitely be more difficult in a wheelchair or on crutches. 10 years ago I had knee surgery that put me on crutches for about 2 months. I then realized how special it is to have the ability to be mobile without any assistance.

I think this movie helped people to understand that one can fall in love with anyone regardless of gender. I like to think that that is important in understanding this movie. It is sad that it did not help provide a message about coming out, but I think the time period in which the movie is protrayed limits that. It was unacceptable for two men to love each other in that society. I believe (even though we have lots of progress to make) that its more acceptable in todays' society.

This movie reenforces the stereotype that some people just cannot accept gays. When Jake G's character gets beat to death, it sends the wrong message to inidividuals that want to come out. They should be able to be and express in any way they want. This movie does not help those that want to let everyone know who they are.

I think this movie is important because of the choide the son made. He wanted to live with the father who was a pre-op transsexual. This movies strys from the norm of the child disliking or not being able to relate to the transgender parent.

You made a very important point. Hedwig wanted to be identified as a person first. That statement really stood out to me. It sounds like music was Hediwg's way of releasing his feelings and energy. Hedwig was able to express through art which is important.

I like to think that people have changed and are more accepting now than they were 14 years ago. The struggle still continues however. Why should someone have to reveal if they are gay? Because the assumed norm is everyone is straight isn;t good enough. Was he a good lawyer? That is what matters.
